Organic Malawi Mzuzu Single Origin


Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union was established in 2007, in the northern area of Malawi, although coffee has been grown in the area since the early 1900s. Muzuzu’s approximately 3,000 smallholder farmers are organized into 6 different cooperatives: Misuku hills in Chitipa district, Phoka hills in Rumphi district, Viphya North in Rumphi, Nkhatabay Highlands, South East Mzimba, and Ntchisi East. Coffee is washed at one of 63 village washing stations and then delivered to a centralized dry mill for hulling, processing and export.

Coffee production levels throughout Malawi has been erratic over the past century due to unstable temperatures, unpredictable rains, coffee pests and diseases, and lack of market access, but Mzuzu has made good progress in the specialty-market sector with aims of increasing specialty washed Arabica coffee. Across the Union, field officers offer training on sustainable agriculture, quality, and processing, and the Union offers microfinance loans so its members can purchase seeds. Women comprise 30% of the board, and some groups also offer women-produced coffee.

Mzuzu became Fairtrade certified in 2009 and has used Fairtrade Premiums to improve local infrastructure such as local roads and teacher accomodations. Muzu also offers certified organic coffees, and the cooperative Union always scores highly in national coffee competitions.
