What the Research Says

The real research says something different. 

One 2016 Australian study found that using spent coffee grounds to grow five plants (broccoli, leek, radish, viola,  and sunflower) stunted their growth. However, other research has pointed to coffee grounds enhancing the growth of other plants, such as soybeans. There’s also some evidence to suggest that coffee grounds can prevent weeds from overwhelming your garden. 

Tips for Using Coffee Grounds in Your Garden

While coffee beans may not cause your plants to shoot up three feet overnight, they’re still a useful organic material that you can take advantage of in your garden. You just need to know the right way to use them. 

  • Compost is key. The safest way to use spent coffee grounds in your soil is to compost them first for at least six months. Doing this allows the toxins in the coffee to break down, meaning the grounds will be less likely to kill your plants and only bring you the good stuff. An extra tip: Make sure coffee grounds don’t make up more than 20% of your compost, or you run the risk of killing good bacteria. 
  • Use it sparingly. You shouldn’t dump pure coffee grounds into your garden and use them as mulch. Coffee grounds are compact, making it hard for water to penetrate and reach your plants. Instead, lay a thin layer of coffee grounds and cover it with a much thicker layer of organic mulch.
  • Not all coffee grounds are acidic. Some people think that coffee grounds will significantly increase the acidity of their soil. But this depends on the coffee grounds you’re using. Most coffee grounds are closer to having a neutral pH, while some can range from very acidic to very alkaline. You should always test your coffee’s pH if you plan to use it as a source of acidity in your garden.
