Why Organic Coffee Matters

Why Organic Coffee Matters

Organic coffee isn’t a trend. It’s a commitment—to the land, to the people who grow it, and to what ends up in your cup.

At Taylor Lane Coffee, organic has been part of our story since the beginning. Long before organic certification was widely available—or widely understood—we believed coffee could be grown with care, intention, and respect for the environment.

Organic, Before It Was Common

When Taylor Lane was founded in 1993, organic coffee farms were rare. Certification pathways were limited, and many farmers were practicing organic methods without the ability to formally label their coffee as such.

Instead of taking the easy route, we chose the long one: partnering with farmers who shared our values and supporting them as they worked toward organic certification. Over time, those relationships grew—and so did our organic offerings.

Today, every coffee we offer is USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified. That wasn’t an overnight shift. It was decades in the making.

What “Organic” Really Means

Organic coffee isn’t just about what’s left out—it’s about what’s protected.

  • No synthetic pesticides or herbicides that harm soil health

  • Healthier ecosystems for wildlife and surrounding communities

  • Safer working conditions for farmers and their families

Organic farming prioritizes long-term sustainability over short-term yield. The result is land that stays fertile, farms that remain viable, and coffee that reflects care at every stage.

Why Fair Trade Matters Too

Organic certification focuses on environmental responsibility. Fair Trade certification ensures social responsibility.

Fair Trade standards support:

  • Fair wages for farmers

  • Safer labor practices

  • Community investment in education and infrastructure

Together, organic and fair trade certifications represent a holistic approach—one that values people and the planet equally.

A Sonoma County Original

In Sonoma County, where agriculture and environmental stewardship are deeply connected, Taylor Lane has long been recognized as a leader in organic coffee. Not because it was fashionable—but because it aligned with our values.

Being one of the early adopters of organic coffee in the region meant taking risks, educating customers, and standing by principles even when it wasn’t the easiest path forward. We’re proud of that history—and even more proud that it continues to shape how we source coffee today.

Why It Matters in Your Cup

Does organic coffee taste better? Many people think so—but that’s not the point.

What matters is knowing that your daily ritual supports:

  • Farming practices that protect the land

  • Growers who are paid fairly

  • A supply chain built on transparency and care

Organic coffee is about making a quieter, better choice—one cup at a time.

Our Commitment, Still

After more than 30 years, our commitment hasn’t changed. We continue to work with certified organic and fair trade farms because we believe coffee should be grown responsibly—and enjoyed thoughtfully.

Organic isn’t an add-on for us. It’s the foundation.
