Regional Notes: An hour’s boat ride from Panajachel, across Lake Atitlan, brings you to the small village of San Juan la Laguna. Another five-minute ride up steep hills by tuk-tuk, a carriage built around a scooter, brings you to the gates of the Cooperativa La Voz, short for “La Voz Que Clame en el Desierto” (the voice that clamors in the desert). Their name references St. John bringing the word of God to a spiritual desert. La Voz consists of 140 small family farms. These families are of Tzutujil Mayan descent and are a very gracious and hospitable people. They grow coffee on the steep slopes of the San Pedro volcano, under a rich shade tree canopy that includes mango, plantain, and avocado trees that also provide homes to a diversity of migratory bird species. They put as much effort into managing this shade canopy as they do in managing the coffee itself. Devotion and pride, intensely rich volcanic soil, and 90 plus years of experience, ensures a vibrant, balanced, and delicious cup of coffee.
Cupping Notes: A delicious balance of sweet chocolate, rich caramel, and juicy berries.
